- Description
Most of the photographs in this album date from 1945 and 1946. There are young men, some of whom are in military uniform, all of them friends and aquaitances of Miria Wills Johnson. One page of photographs depicts her Australian pen friends, another, people who attended a Y.P.C. Carnival Ball. Three photographs show a group of young men playing baseball, and there are two pages of snaps of motorbike races in progress. Family members, pets, picnics and excursions are represented.
The largest section of photographs relate to the barque "Pamir" which was visited and photographed by Miria Wills Johnson when it was in Lyttelton in November/December 1946. Many of the photographs were taken for her. She climbed the bowsprit, the masts and the yard arms and took views of Lyttelton Harbour and of other ships in port at the time. Many of the sailors have been photographed and named. One, Colin Jessup, she seemed to know, and he was probably a Chatham Island connection.
There are also photographs and a press cutting of the newly delivered inter island ferry, "Hinemoa".
