Description

Photograph shows the large and intricately carved Ngāti Tūwharetoa pātaka named Hīnana ki uta, Hīnana ki tai (search the land and sea), which was built at Waihī on the shores of Lake Taupō in 1855. Shows a Māori group seated alongside, comprising a woman flanked by two men holding guns. People possibly identified (from left to right); Rangitua, Ngaumu, and Aperahama Whetu, also known as Tuatara. Photograph taken by Daniel Louis Mundy between 1863 and 1872.
