Naval machine gun crew with maxim gun, in Samoa. Probably taken in 1899 or 1914. Photographer unidentified.
Source of descriptive information - date: a researcher pointed out that the previous date given (1888-1889) was incorrect as Ross was not in Samoa at this time MM 22 May 2015
Ross went to Samoa in 1899 and at the beginning of World War 1 (Information from the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, 1993, Vol 2,page 400a). This photograph was probably taken during one of those visits.
