Description

A group photograph of Mrs Jessie Levin and her sons taken in a garden in front of a board fence. Probably photographed by James Coutts Crawford between 1858 and 1860.

Inscriptions: Album page - beneath image - Mrs Levin & family

James Coutts Crawford creator of the album, and who probably took many of the images, returned to New Zealand in late 1857. Sir Charles Clifford and family who feature in a number of images in this album, returned to England in 1860. For this reason the date has been established as between 1858 and 1860. This is also consistent with the women's dresses. Full crinolines as seen in the album were in fashion from 1856 to 1864.

Jessie Levin (nee Hort) was a daughter of Abraham Hort, a Jewish merchant who came to Wellington in 1843. She Married Nathaniel Levin, another Jewish Merchant who founded Levin & Co in 1851. The two boys in the photograph would probably be her two sons, Lionel Mocatta Levin (left) and William Hort Levin (right). William was to succeed his father in the partnership of Levin & Co in 1869.
