Description

Sergeant Pilot James Allen Ward and his crew studying the course of their hazardous trip.

During this trip a section of the wing of the Wellington bomber they were flying in was struck by a shell and caught fire. Sergeant Ward climbed onto the wing and smothered the fire with a canvas engine cover. For this he was awarded the Victoria Cross but was killed in action over Germany two months later.
