Small square box, with a reproduction of Raphael's Madonna with the infant Jesus and St John on its lid, tondo-shaped within a decorative surround.

Description: Small flat mother-of-pearl shapes of Chinese origin, some fish-shaped, some rectangular, with patterns incised o them, part of a Chinese game These gambling counters may date from as early as the late eighteenth century, according to several websites. They were made in China for export to England, for use in gambling at cards Another ornamental box once belonging to Katherine Mansfield (Curios-018-001) contains further examples of these counters Quantity: 1 curio(s).
