View from the hills to the south of Picton, looking through native bush towards the township, with clear view of streets and houses, Victoria Domain and the harbour. On the verso is an outline sketch in pencil of hills and water
Dated 1883, because Temple's sketchbook shows he was in Picton in 1883 (reported by Neil Roberts of Robert McDougall Art Gallery, via Merilynne Evans, on 12 January 1999).
Previous dating of 1870 based on the Roman numerals LXX beside the artist's initials; this is in fact the artist's running numbering system; the work on the verso is numbered LXXI. The artist did not arrive in NZ until 1879, so that the work must date from after that. A similar work in a private collection had been dated "ca 1890", and this had been previously used as the basis for dating this work, before it was changed to 1870.

cf Very similar watercolour in private collection, with same title, (neg 53825 1/2 - File print in Drawings & Prints under artist/title, and colour transparency DCT-01355). Main difference is foreground with variant bush and a sawn tree-stump, centre foreground. This privately owned work is dated to ca 1890.
