A collection of Scottish pieces copied or arranged for piano by Alice McLean. A wide variety of dance music is included - hornpipes, strathspeys, jigs, reels, etc. Many have named composers and all have titles. There is one composition by Alice Rowley "Lagmhor strathspey".

Variations in title - Title on note written by the donor and inserted in the inside cover of the book reads 'The Laghmor [sic] Song Book written by Alice McLean at Laghmor Station, managed by her husband; Mrs McLean gathered these songs sung by the shepherds etc. (c.1890?).' No words are given to any of the music in the book.

Alice McLean was for many years a member of the Canterbury Caledonian Society and became an Honorary Life Member. As Alice Rowley, she met her first husband, Donald McLean, at a concert of the Society in which she had performed. This book is probably a compilation of Scottish music which she used when performing at Society gatherings. This also mentions music copyist Harry Herring who could be the copyist for much of this manuscript).
