In 1853, the danger arose because of the machinations of "the self-styled Friends of Freedom of Election". The New Zealand Spectator and Cook Strait Guardian advised thus on 6 August 1853: "Remember you can only vote once in the day. You can give a vote to one or more candidates but it must be done (and all names you wish to vote for inserted) upon one voting paper only. Take care not to sign your voting paper until the name of every candidate you intend voting for is written upon it. When you have done that, rush to the Poll, and freely elect the men you think best fitted to you".
