Description

Head and shoulders portrait of Abel Tasman, based on Bartholomeus van der Helst's portrait, held by the Royal Commonwealth Society. There is some doubt that the portrait actually does show Tasman.

There are two portraits said to show Tasman, but neither is absolutely certain. Apart from the Van der Helst portrait, there is one called Dutch family by Jacob Gerritsz Cuyp, in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia (an oil painting, NK3) showing a man with his hand on a globe, his wife and a little girl. Both supposed portraits of Tasman show him with his hair parted in the middle, a moustache and small beard.
