Description

Shows a procession of Clydesdale horses on Cambridge Terrace, Wellington, in the 1920s. The hotel Selwyn is on the left, the Wellington Council's works depot can be seen in the background and the tall chimney, straight ahead, was known as the Destructor.

This photographed featured in the Evening Post, 24 January 1996 (courtesy of New Zealand Free Lance Collection in the Alexander Turnbull Library) and many readers responded with information and interesting stories which can be found at AT 13/12/4 08 April 1998.

This part of Cambridge Terrace was known as Clyde Quay until 1925. The Council's works depot was on the site now occupied by the New World Supermarket. In the 1920s the council had teams of draught horses which were used to collect rubbish and deliver milk. The tall chimney known as the Destructor, signifies the site of the council furnaces where rubbish was burned.
