Head and shoulders portrait of a young Tahitian male, the king of Tahiti.
Cook and his men referred to Tu as Otoo.

Physical Description: Oil on canvas on board 362 x 280 mm
Provenance: Portraits were painted of both Captain Cook and of Tu by John Webber, the official artist on Cook's 3rd voyage to the Pacific. Cook's portrait was given to the Tahitians and has long since disappeared. (It was last reported as in existence by Captain Vancouver on a visit to Tahiti in 1798). Tu's portrait was given to Cook, and after his death in Hawaii in 1779, passed to Captain James King, Cook's successor as leader of the voyage. It was inherited by a descendant of King's.
