Description

Gum diggers digging kauri gum from the soil. Photographed by the Northwood Brothers in 1911.

The men are face digging. Land such as that seen in the photograph had often been worked over by individual diggers using the old hit-and-miss method of gum-spear and spade. To get the remaining gum, gangs would dig every bit of land to a depth of two or three metres. (Information from Hingley, Bert. Gumdiggers of the North. School Publications, 1980, p 33).
