Description

A two-part panorama of an extensive view of the Wairarapa across the plain formed by the Ruamahanga River in the Pihautea area, South Wairarapa (between the east shore of Lake Wairarapa and the Ruamahanga river, close to modern Martinborough). Wind-swept cabbage-trees to the left, and one cabbage tree that has been cut down and lashed upside-down (as a shelter?) to the trunk of another. Bush-clad plains, the gorge cut by the river, a swampy area to the right of the river indicated and hills in the background. Part of the name Ruam[ahanga] and "4 miles from Bidwill's" are also inscribed on the drawings. On the verso of these two drawings is another panorama of the Wairarapa 'The Wairarapa Valley, 1848' (A-292-078/079).

Morissons appears to be a misspelling for Morrison's. The word could be read as Mousson's, except that there was no land-owner of that name in the Wairarapa in 1848, whereas Hugh Morrison was established in a run adjacent to Bidwills, close to the present site of Martinborough.

Other Titles - Morrison's (Morison's) run, Hakeke, or Glenmorven

Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - title. Other inscriptions written on the relevant features. The name Te Tawai is crossed out and may be a mistake for Te Awaiti (Riddiford's nearby run).
