Description

A cricket game in progress at New Plymouth (on the school grounds), surrounded by houses, with Marsland Stockade on the hill to the left, and Mount Egmont in the background. A newspaper clipping dated Sept 25 1913 in the back of the sketchbook, probably a quote from the Richmond-Atkinson papers, mentions this cricket game and its interruption by the firing of shots.

Extended Title - From: Warre, Henry. [Sketchbook ] 1864-1865.

Inscriptions: Recto - bottom centre - title

"On the morning of the 15th [September 1864], whilst some of the men were indulging in a scratch game of cricket across the [Waiwakaiho] river, in the temporary company of a fatigue party told off to procure some slab timber for use in the redoubt, two shots were fired in quick succession amongst them from the hedge adjoining the bush, at a distance of about 150 yards from the stockade. It did not require a moment's reflection for the cricketers and fatigue party - who were unarmed - to betake themselves to the redoubt and stockade, from which the fire was quickly returned, and soon became of a very general character. The native, however, not deeming it prudent to endeavour to carry the work by assault, in the face of such a well-sustained rifle fire, finally retired, the only casualty reported upon our side from the operation being that of a slight wound occasioned to Ensign Johnson by a spent ball, on one of his arms. A young lad of McNiccol's having had a narrow escape from a ball which passed through his cap." (Newsclipping text in back pocket of sketchbook)
