Description

Panoramic view of Milford Sound with survey ship H. M. S. Acheron on the far right and a group of Maori on the foreshore.

Has previously been attributed to W. J. W. Hamilton and to John Lort Stokes. However comparison with the style of watercolours known to be by Evans held in the National Maritime Museum (Greenwich) and the Hydrographer of the Navy (Taunton) strongly suggest an attribution to Evans.

At the time this image was reproduced a definite attribution to Evans had not been made and the picture was published as by an unknown artist.

Admiral John Lort Stokes (then Captain) surveyed the New Zealand coasts in HMS Acheron during 1849-51. This original watercolour from which this reproduction has been taken dates from this voyage.
