Railway employees, Upper Hutt, circa 1900. James Johnson is 2nd from the left. Other men unknown. Photographer unidentified. A caption for this photograph in "Upper Hutt: Reflections from the past" by Joseph Mervyn Kenneally, 1980, page 19, reads: "Gangers, or the railway 'guardians', wearing a variety of different styled hats, take a break for the camera around 1900. Two hand propelled velocipedes [jiggers, or handcarts] of the period provided transport to and from the work site..."
