- Description
Monotone watercolour copies of the oil paintings done by James Barry in 1818, of Tuai and Titeri.
Robley's notes indicate that the original oil paintings could not be photographed clearly, so the sketches were made for likeness and to show the tattoo marks on the face of Tuai.
Robley's handwritten notes indicate that the oil paintings were formerly with the Church Missionary Society, but had been applied for and obtained for New Zealand, by Mr T E Donne a government agent. Another hand (Donne's) has written that the CMS accepted his suggestion that the painting of Hongi, Waikato and Rev Kendall should go to New Zealand, and they also added the portraits of Tui and Tetere [sic].
