Description

Shows the British troops in the foreground, some on horseback, some manning cannons, and further away some firing rifles at enemy positions across the river. From the extreme left foreground, curving into the right distance, is the Cape to Cairo Railway.

Numbered and named features are: Cape to Cairo Railway, Road to Jacobsdal & Bloemfontein, Modder River, Riet River, Island and hotel, Broken railway bridge, Armoured train, Lord Methuen and staff, Galloper, Carrying wounded to the rear, Guards advancing in attack formation, Guards' Maxim, Guards' Brigade, Loyal North lancashire, Northamptons, Northumberland Fusiliers, Yorkshire Light Infantry, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders fording river, Field artillery, Naval brigade Battery, Naval brigade, Death of Lieut. Col. Northcott, Guards swimming the river, Ambulance Corps, Boer trenches, Boer artillery, Boers charging f[orward], Boer Laager.
