Shows a group of eight scattered buildings behind fencing, on the banks of a river which curves past on the left. Smoke rises from the chimney of one of the huts. Behind the huts are stands of trees, including one cabbage tree at the right.
Hikurangi Pa, 40 miles upriver from Wanganui, was near the town of Karatia (Galatia). It had been populous (350 people) in the 1840s, but by the time T W Downes was writing his "History and guide to the Wanganui River" in 1921, it was used as a burial ground.
Either derived from, or the basis for, the image in "New Zealand graphic", Christmas number 1890, page 13, printed as a three-colour steam lithograph.
