Description

The Frances Glacier (formerly known as the Clyde Glacier) with the Frances River at its base. The view is taken from the ridge between the Agnes Stream Valley and the main Clyde Valley

Illustration for lecture, Notes on the mountains and glaciers of the Canterbury Province, New Zealand, delivered by J. Haast 1864

The Clyde Glacier is no longer a current name. The Clyde Glacier is much reduced in size since the 19th century and is now the two separate Frances and Sir Colin Campbell Glaciers. The Frances Glacier is the source of the Frances River, which flows into the Clyde River, then the Rangitata River

Copied from an original drawing by Julius von Haast. Gully's source for this watercolour is likely to be Haast's drawing 'The Great Clyde Glacier, real source of the Rangitata', Library reference number C-097-025
