Description

Wellington & Manawatu Railways steam locomotive WMR 1, photographed by an unidentified photographer before the WMR signage had been added. This image is a film negative taken from a print in Godber Album Vol 108, p 64 (PA1-q-101). Godber has identified the driver standing inside the cab as J. Fryer.

Originally No 1 on the Wellington and Manawatu Railway, later "Wh" class no. 447 steam locomotive was built by Manning Wardle (Maker's no. 920/84). When the line was purchased by New Zealand Railways in 1908 this engine was renumbered "Wh" 449. Written off in 1927, and sold.
