Cromb describes her family's travels from Edinburgh to Plymouth, their embarkation on to the `Kaikoura' which left on 22 Oct 1887, and the daily activities and events of shipboard life with considerable detail about the passengers and crew. Although it is in diary mode, it is more like an episodic essay as Cromb narrates stories rather than simply noting events. A genealogical summary accompanies MS-Papers-5595.

Bethia Cromb later became Bethia Mawhinney. Cromb family were assisted emigrants on the 'Kaikoura', arriving at Wellington on 3 Dec 1887 and then to Port Chalmes on the 'Waihola'.
