Date

Description

Paua inset into six double-sided gold shapes, in the form of straight-edged droplets.

The necklace came to the Library housed in a box labelled "Wilderness Gems of New Zealand", but this company is probably not the makers of the necklace.

The inscription on the rim of the central circular element indicates that the gold is 9 carats.

Dated 1940s on the assumption that it is the same necklace as that presented to Miss Luxford in 1947. No connection has been established between "Wilderness Gems of New Zealand" (label on present box) and the Returned Soldiers' Association of Disabled Servicemen. In fact, the Dominion's report of 28 January 1947, page 5, reports that the medal presented was at that time "encased in a small box of polished New Zealand-grown wood".

Other Titles - Nola Luxford Dolberg

Inscriptions: (on rim of central circular element): 9 CT

Copies of the photographs relating to Peter Fraser presenting Nola Luxford with this necklace are included in PAColl-9548-14.

Quantity: 1 curio(s).

Physical Description: Paua and gold, on metal chain, length 365 mm.

Provenance: The necklace is likely to have been the one made by disabled servicemen and presented to Nola Luxford by the New Zealand Government in 1947, in recognition of her work during the Second World War (See "Evening post", 28 January 1947, page 5, which shows a photograph of Miss Luxford being presented with the necklace in the Prime Minister's Room, Parliament Buildings, by Prime Minister Peter Fraser. The text reports that a necklace of similar provenance had been given to Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt. Other newspaper articles about the presentation of the necklace are: The Dominion, 28 January 1947, page 5, and "Southern Cross", 28 January 1947, page 6).
