Description

Three New Zealand Maori Battlion soldiers looking over the tops of barrels of mutton birds for Christmas dinner, Senio River, Italy, during World War Two. Photograph taken circa 23 December 1944 by George Kaye.

The subjects have been identified as: Robert John Dixon or Tom Poki (left), Wiremu Potatutatu Ruru (middle), and Rodney Dean Pitt (right).

Isabel Dixon identified her father John Robert Dixon and Wiremu Potatutau Ruru (21 June 2007). Rodney Pitt is identified on NZHistory website https://28maoribattalion.org.nz/photo/muttonbird-barrels-christmas-1944 (accessed 7 January 2021).
