Cattle descending a steep winding road with cleared bush, probably the Rimutaka Road on the Wairarapa side. A bridge crosses a small stream in the foreground. There are several tall dead trees in the centre beside the road
Another very similar sketch by Chevalier The Hutt Valley 1869 is in the Auckland City Art Gallery. It is a charcoal and wash view but lacks the cattle and has only a man leaning over the bridge
A further watercolour version of the same scene is held by the Library, reference number C-014-011. It includes an armed man on horseback and three Maori leaning on the bridge
