Matene Te Whiwhi and Wi Tako Ngatata are enlisted by McLean (1865), to try and pursuade influential Poverty Bay chiefs to resist the encroachement of three to four hundred anti-government Paimarire-Hauhau followers in their region. Includes comments about pending war at Wairoa and the Kingitanga regarding the political instability in Waikato and Taranaki.
