A seated Maori man wearing a European suit, covered with a fine flax cloak. He has shark's tooth earrings and is holding a large greenstone patu in his right hand. His moko shows clearly in the photograph. William Strutt, the artist of drawings in the album, has written A Maori below the portrait.
Photographer may be J. N. Crombie, according to the Curator, Photographic Archive, 1990s. Crombie arrived in New Zealand late in 1862 after Strutt had returned to Australia.
