Description

Photograph of bomb damage to the Convent of the Sisters of the Poor, Nieuport, Belgium. Copy negative made by Albert Percy Godber of an image by an unidentified photographer which was published in "The Sphere : an illustrated newspaper for the home", Vol LX, No 780, London, 2nd January 1915. The image has the inscription: "What of 1915? A forcible commentary on the season of 'Good will' with which the year 1914 closed. A sad picture taken at the Convent of the Sisters of the Poor, Nieuport, where a huge German shell landed, partially demolishing the outer wall. The crucifix immediately behind was, however, almost unharmed. It stands now quite open and exposed and in the full view of the public gaze, a pathetic reminder of the fact that 'war is war'".
