- Description
Martin Eccles of the Wellington Mounted Rifles went to Gallipoli with the 2nd Expeditionary Force. After Gallipoli he became part of the ANZAC Mounted Division in Palestine. These photographs relate to this part of his war service. They are not organised in any way, but many have information written on the back. This is an individual soldier's record of events, not that of a military strategist. Many photos are of individual, or groups of soldiers, whom Eccles knew or was associated with. Others record troop movements across the countryside, and towns such as Raffa and Jaffa. There are also one or two of the British High Command in Palestine photographed in informal situations. Time off on leave and visits to Egyptian antiquities are also represented.
Finally, there are a few shots of Eccles in New Zealand either before or after the war.
Martin Ashton Eccles remained in Gallipoli until the final disembarkation. He was in the army in Palestine until the end of the war. He became an Anglican priest and as Canon Eccles was attatched to the Diocese of Waipa (Waikato).
