Helmore has recorded the duties and appointments kept by the Governor-General during 1917 with each entry giving the time and place, and a brief description of the occasion and the people involved. Guests staying at Government House are noted; some leisure activities are mentioned, eg tennis, riding or shooting and he lists the people involved, but there are no personal observations or comments by the diarist.

Helmore is the attributed diarist; the Library has a similar diary for 1916 which is attributed to him. It is noted he was an aide-de-camp to Liverpool, the Governor-General.
