Description

Motor launch and boat with outboard motor, photographed in 1930 by Robert E Wells.

Inscriptions: Verso - top centre - Mokau River 1930; Verso - centre - A rendez-vous just below the Old Mine at the place called "The Mine Clearing" at that time overgrown with huge, luscious blackberries. To fill a 4 gallon tin, took only 45 minutes. I was there and tried it. This is the boat which I had to row 1 mile, upstream and downstream, each day, in 1927/28 (until I bought an outboard motor) for the sum of 6d per day - "ferry allowance" for taking 2 boys to and from school each day! And, out of this princely sum, I was required to keep the boat in good repair. When new ribs were required I went into the bush, cut down rata vines, sawed them down the middle, and then rivetted them in place! Those were the days!
