Photograph of a tank designed by Robert Semple, known as `Semple's tank' or a `mobile pill box', and built by the Ministry of Works at Temuka. Photograph taken between 1940 and 1941, by an unidentified photographer.
Basic unit - RD8 Caterpillar Tractor (1939); Speed - 7 1/2 MPH (normal), 1.5 MPH (2:1 extra gearbox); Weight - 25-26 tons (2 tons of armour plate); Armour - 7/16" Manganese Steel in V corrugated form backed by 1/2" mild steel plate; Armament - six / .303 machine guns plus one / 37mm canon (never fitted); Three tanks built 1940-1941 by Ministry of Works; Workshop at Temuka; Horsepower - 108 Flywheel, 96 Drawbar.
