Shows redoubt in Waikato amongst surrounding hills; tents of Forest Rangers' camp are in background to the right. In the foreground are several resting Forest Rangers, one standing on guard duty with his rifle, guarding two Maori men, two women and a child amongst ferns or bracken. A further group of Rangers and prisoners is standing in a shallow valley in the middle distance.
Probably drawn while von Tempsky and his company were stationed at the Redoubt for several months until June 1864.
Previously described as [Waikato landscape with figures] - see Young, Rose. 'G.F.von Tempsky, artist and adventurer' (Martinborough, Alister Taylor, 1981) catalogue no. 80.
