Description

Shows the three ships of the NZ Company's preliminary expedition at anchor, at centre left, and a cutter from one of them beaching on the mainland at right foreground. Fisherman Island in the background.

"Astrolabe Roads" is short for Astrolabe Roadstead or harbour

Letter from Pat W Win on 14 October 2010 identifies the foreground boat as a deal boat; an open boats also called a lugger, which carried a dipping lug mainsail on the mainmast and a standing lug (sail) on the mizzen. The mainsail was hoisted on a gaff and hooked to the stern at the lower end; it had no boom, so changing tack involved unhooking the stern end and rehooking it when the sail was in the required position. See his article in Nelson Historical Society Journal, Volume 6, Issue 3, 2000, page 59.
