Two photographs taken by Malcolm Ross on the cruise of HMS Mildura to the Cook Islands, Niue and Tonga, October 1900, during which the Cook Islands and Niue were annexed on behalf of New Zealand.
The upper photograph (PA1-q-633-17-1) shows Lord Ranfurly (3d from left), landing on Mangaia from an outrigger canoe, 10 October 1900. Colonel Gudgeon is standing at the extreme left.
The lower photograph (PA1-q-633-17-2) shows a group of people watching the landing of Lord Ranfurly on Mangaia, 10 October 1900.
