An engraving in three sections. At the top left is the Auckland football team's banner, with a list of the games played between 1888 and 1889, then a head and shoulders frontal portrait of O. Wells, the captain. Right of centre at the top is a similar portrait of A. Bayly, the Taranaki captain, and their banner, with two victories listed. The lower two-thirds depicts a scrummage, and within that is a small tondo, lower right, showing a maul.
According to p. 8 of the same issue of this journal, the game took place at Potter's Paddock, Auckland. A drawing of the 'Grand Stand at Potter's Paddock, Auckland' is signed S. E. Slader, who may also be the artist for the Taranaki v. Auckland image
