Very detailed diaries from 1 Apr 1874 to 19 Jan 1875 (volumes 4 and 5) describing voyage to Australia and travels there and in New Zealand., Describes his arrival in Auckland in Oct 1874 and his extensive travels through the North and South Islands, giving his impressions of places visited, his meeting with Sir George Grey, Anglo-Maori relations, and on Maori character culture and future; meetings with Von Haast, Rolleston and James Hector; New Zealand birds and wildlife; the Western and southern goldfields. A description of his movements in Australia may be found in the inventory.
