Description

View looking along the ruins of the 'Villa of Maecenas' at Tivoli, near Rome, built of Travertine marble. A traveller is standing at the base of the ruins in the foreground and there are other figures nearby and in the distance, all dwarfed by the ruins. (Focillon number 786).

Gaius Maecenas was a member of the ancient Etruscan aristocracy in Rome. A friend and benefactor of Horace and Vergil, he left his extensive property to Augustus.
