Description

Shows two soldiers, standing in front of a British, a New Zealand and an RF flag. The left soldier has NZ Army badges on his collar, and wears a hat with a khaki and green hatband (indicating mounted rifles); the one on the right has NZ on his epaulettes, and wears a hat with a khaki and red hatband (indicating infantry). Between them is a wreath encircling a red sign with the Maori greeting "Kia ora", above the words : Hancock's "Imperial" ale, stout. The calendar for 1917 is at the lower edge.

The central red sign "Kia ora" has been stuck over the original sign "ANZAC". This indicates that the original artwork was made in 1915 or 1916, after the acronym ANZAC was first used. It probably also reflects the fact that the term ANZAC became protected in 1916, and it may not have been permissible to use it in advertising of this sort (See information retrieved 4 October 2013 from http://www.anzac.govt.nz/significance/traditions.html).

As advertised in the New Zealand tablet in 1906, Hancock's Imperial ale and stout won a gold medal at the St Louis Exhibition.
