Description

A general view of the New Zealand Supply Column's car repair workshops in France during World War I. The workshops which are refurbished railway cars (complete with wheels) have equipment such as lathes and workbenches installed. Soldiers are working inside them and on wooden extensions. Photograph taken 3 August 1917 by Henry Armytage Sanders.

Other - An original print from this negative is in album PA1-f-091

Caption - "The Cars' Hospital where cars that have suffered casualties are repaired. The New Zealand Supply Column. The Workshops. The Cars' Hospital. 3.8.17." (Album)

The statement that the workshops are refurbished railway cars has been disputed by researcher Ian Stroud in his article "The New Zealand Divisional Tail" , in 'Forts and Works', July 2018, pp 1-7, where he states that the workshop bodies were built to a War Department design by the English lorry manufacturers and fitted to the lorries before delivery.
