Description

Original letter written to Ethel Sturm in [Oct?] 1915 by Claude Burley a member of the 2nd Battalion, Wellington Regiment, while he was convalescing in England. He describes the Battalion's march from Airaines to the Somme on 2 Sep and his participation in the major offensive against the Germans launched on 15 Sep. The Battalion remained in the line until 21 Sep when it was rested. Burley describes the artillery bombardment of the German lines, the advance on, and capture of their forward trenches. He also describes the first deployment of tanks and the contribution of aircraft in the battle and also the physical conditions at the front for the soldiers.
