Description

View of the township at Kawhia on the inner north-western shoreline of the Kawhia Harbour, Otorohanga District. Shows the general store (Ward's Hall) and various buildings on the waterfront, boats in the sand, and a large Pohutukawa tree growing on the hill above the bay. Photograph taken circa 1920s, by an unidentified photographer.

Additional information about the two storied buldling supplied by a researcher 'Two-storey building in foreground with Ward Bros sign was built in 1903 by Scott. It had a business on the ground floor and a hall above known as Scott's Hall. In 1923 WP Ward purchased the building on behalf of Ward Bros (engineering & plumbing) and the hall was later referred to as Ward's Hall. The hall was used as a cinema from about 1914 until the early 1950s' August 2022
