Description

Members of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Regiment travelling through Nelson before leaving to fight in World War One. Several Nelson businesses can be identified behind the soldiers and their horses, including J. E. Jounsell & Co., Booksellers & Stationers; J. Shields, & Co., the Wine & Spirit Merchants; M. M. Webster, Provision Merchant; and Trathen & Co., a drapery. Photograph taken by Frederick Nelson Jones in August 1914.

Inscriptions: Photographer's title on negative - bottom centre - The Mounted Rifles leave for the front. Nelson N.Z. Aug. 18. 1914. F.N.Jones.
