Diary and letter books kept by Dr Thomas Renwick (1846-1871) and diary kept by a member of the Mowat family, probably Marjory Mowat (1884-1885). Renwick wanted to keep a diary and made several brief attempts in the 1840s. The letter books mostly relate to business matters, particularly Renwick's farming interests and concerns but do include a few letters to family members. He frequently noted the vessel on which the letter would be sent.

Description: Diary begun by Renwick in Feb 1846 with the intention `I have long determined to keep a journal...'; he wrote some entries in 1846, a few in 1847 and ended on 23 Oct 1848 with an entry beginning `I again resolve to resume my journal...'. While he kept the diary he wrote of his activities and interests and of the prospects of the colony of Nelson and of New Zealand as a whole. The volume then becomes a letter book from Jun 1849 to Sep 1858. Some of the unidentified recipients are A McDonald, J C [?] Hamley, Jas [?] Lea, Capt [?] Ray or the `Orion', William, Taunton Esq of Wellington, Mr Bishop, the manager of the UBG of Wellington, Mrs Read, D P McEuen, M Hart of UBG Sydney, Mrs McRae, Bill, his mother, Parsons, Dr Fitzgerald, Mr Bonnington, Donald, Mr Read, Mrs Warburton, Mrs or Mr Sweet, Campbell, Capt Scott, James Wynen and H Williams.
