Description

Head and shoulders three-quarters frontal portrait of a Hawaiian man. He has a moustache and small chin beard and a ridge of curly hair running down from the crown of his head. Possibly a portrait of Palea, a sub-chief under Kalani'opu'u (Cook's Terriaboo)

Possibly a study for Ellis' engraving 'A man of Sandwich Islands' (Ellis, 1782, II, fp 150). Joppien / Smith number for this drawing is 3.315. They quote Samwell, in Cook, Journals III, ii, 1161 'Parea is generally on board the Discovery & keeps the ship clear, & as the great number of women that lye on board every night would rather be in the way in the day time Parea comes on board early every morning & sends them ashore, telling them that there will be no occasion for them till Night'. 'We had several other visitors of consequence, amongst which was a young man whose name was Purraah [Palea or Parea] ... a principal attendant of Terriaboo, who was the King of the Island; he was about five feet eight in height, his person was pleasing, and he appeared to be possessed of great good nature' (Ellis, 1782, II, 88)
