- Description
A poem humorously relating the events at a political meeting where "Skrimmy" (Mr S E Shrimski), George Jones (probably the member of Parliament for Waitaki) and the Premier (Sir George Grey) spoke. Other characters mentioned are Tom Russell, Bob Mitchell, Atkinson, Jock Tamson, and Beatty. The matters discussed at the meeting included land swindles, squatters at Tekapo (land grab by Tom Russell); George Jones warned against federation and against Chinese immigrants, and advocated land taxation, criticising "the unearned increment".
Comments about this meeting appeared in the North Otago times, 14 May 1883, page 3; and 17 May 1884, page 3.
