Three-quarter length seated portrait of fossil collector and artist Mary Ann Mantell (nee Woodhouse), wife of paleontologist Gideon Mantell. She is dressed in black satin, suggesting mourning, possibly for her daughter Hannah. Her apparent age in the portrait suggests a date of at least the 1850s and possibly the 1860s. She is shown with white hair, a lace cap and collar and her hands crossed in her lap, holding a pair of spectacles.
