Diary covers period 13 Aug 1914-21 May 1915 and describes Cameron's activities during this period. They begin with ink-written optimism, whereas the final despairing entries are scrawled in pencil.

The diary inspired the New Zealand artist Bob Kerr, whose large multi-panel paintings of Gallipoli, with words from Cameron's diary, were exhibited in 2010.
