Description

Draft of a map of the Rangitikei River in five sections, designed to be folded when printed. The sections are: 1, rapids 1 to 28; 2, rapids 24 to 90; 3, rapids 86 to 158; 4, rapids 155 to 204; 5, rapids 201 to Kakariki. The start of the north-to-south trip is near the suspension bridge just north of Utiku, and the end at the road and rail bridges near Kakariki. Sections 1, 2 and 3 have enlargements of difficult sections of the river.

Natural features marked on the map include cliffs with approximate heights, rapids, greywacke shingle beds, tributary streams, and a stretch in section 4 where the river channel varies daily. Bridges are marked and also shown in silhouette looking downstream. Prominent tree groups, houses and bush are indicated, as well as steel cables, power pylons and major roads.

Data are given for a trip in January 1953: distance 51 miles, falling 700 ft; 16 hours on the water; initial speed 4 mph; final speed 2 1/2 mph.
